Real-time or Offline Data

Even with relational databases such as SQL Server, I have seen situations where a database used to support a web site was brought to its knees because someone was doing heavy analytic reports on the same server.  For many customers running a MultiValued Line of Business (LOB) application, the application is mission critical, stable and resourced about right for normal peak use.  What’s more, the database is configured and tuned for an OnLine Transaction Processing (OLTP) type load.  Indexing and other features that directly impact performance are all focused on the transactional aspect of the business.  Trying to put an analytic load on that same system, especially during normal operating hours, would create an unacceptable impact to overall performance.  Any efforts to tune the database to support a more analytic application would likely seriously impact performance of the transactional business application.

For many companies, the reporting needs simply don’t mandate immediate, up to the minute access to real-time data.  Reporting can be done on data that is a few hours, or even a few days old, and still allow for obtaining meaningful information that can be reacted to in a timely fashion.
